A vision system does not need more light. It needs the right light to reach the sensor and everything else to stop at the lens. That is what an optical filter does, and it is usually the cheapest component in the cell.
We supply a complete range of machine vision optical filters to be installed together with our LED illuminators: 223 references across ten families, from broadband and narrowband bandpass to interference, longpass, shortpass and NIR-cut, neutral density, polarizers, protective windows, acrylic filters, light balancing and diffusers.
The reason to fit one is almost always the same. An industrial cell is never dark: there is a skylight, a ceiling lamp, a neighbouring machine, an operator with a torch. If the camera can see that light, the image changes during the day and the inspection threshold that worked in the morning fails in the afternoon. A filter matched to the illuminator makes the camera blind to everything except the light you control, and the inspection becomes repeatable — which is the property a production line is actually buying.
Filters also do things that no amount of extra light can do: they suppress specular glare on glossy surfaces, they remove the chromatic aberration a lens introduces across a wide spectrum, they isolate a fluorescence emission from its excitation, and they protect an expensive front element from the factory floor.
The range in short
223 references, ten families
Bandpass, multi bandpass, longpass, shortpass/NIR-cut, neutral density, polarizing, protective, acrylic, light balancing, diffuser.
240 nm to 1000 nm and beyond
From deep UV to short-wave infrared, in broadband, narrowband and interference versions.
Mounted or unmounted
Threaded mounts from M13.25 to M105, C-mount 25.4, slip mounts for lenses without threads, unmounted glass cut to shape.
Matched to our illuminators
Every LED wavelength we produce has a corresponding filter; the pairing table is below.
Selection is part of the supply
Tell us the material, the defect and the ambient light: we specify the filter with the illuminator.
What a filter changes in the image
- Ambient light immunity — the camera sees only the band of your illuminator, so the image no longer changes when a door opens or a lamp is switched on
- Contrast on the feature that matters — a wavelength that the target absorbs and the background reflects turns an invisible difference into a grey-level difference
- Sharper edges — restricting the spectrum removes the chromatic aberration a lens introduces when it focuses several wavelengths at once
- Glare suppression — crossed polarizers remove the specular component and leave the diffuse light that carries the information
- Colour fidelity — cutting the near infrared that silicon sensors see but the eye does not keeps whites neutral and colour thresholds stable
- Fluorescence separation — the excitation is blocked and only the emission reaches the sensor, which is what makes the marker visible at all
- Protection — a sacrificial window takes the scratches and the spatter instead of the front element of the lens
Matching a filter to your illuminator
This is the short path. Take the wavelength of the illuminator you are using and read across: the filters listed transmit that band and reject the rest. Where more than one code appears, the first is the broadband choice — highest throughput, tolerant of LED peak drift — and the following ones progressively narrower, for cases where ambient rejection matters more than signal.

Two rules of thumb worth stating. First, the filter band must contain the LED peak with margin: LEDs drift with temperature and with production batch, and a filter that is too narrow will start cutting your own light. Second, a filter only helps if the illuminator is stronger than the ambient light inside that band — filtering does not create signal, it removes competition.
Bandpass Filters

A bandpass filter transmits one region of the spectrum and blocks everything else. Paired with a monochromatic illuminator it does two jobs at once: it lets through the light you control and rejects the ambient light you do not, and it removes the chromatic aberration that a lens introduces when it has to focus several wavelengths at the same time. The result is a sharper, higher-contrast image that stays the same when someone opens a door or switches on a ceiling lamp. Broad bandwidth (BP) versions maximise throughput and tolerate LED peak drift; narrow bandwidth (BN) versions isolate a single source more aggressively; interference (Bi) versions give the steepest edges for fluorescence and laser work.

Multi Bandpass Filters

Dual and triple bandpass filters transmit two or three separate bands and block everything between them. They are the answer when one station has to inspect more than one feature — for example a colour print under white light and a security mark under UV or IR — without a filter wheel and without moving parts. The camera sees only the bands you selected, so each acquisition can be lit by a different source and still share the same optics.

Longpass Filters

A longpass filter blocks everything below a cut-on wavelength and transmits everything above it. In practice it is how you make a camera ignore visible light and see only the infrared you are projecting, or how you cut UV excitation out of a fluorescence image while keeping the emission. The same construction, in its thicker versions, doubles as a lens protection window.

Shortpass / NIR-cut Filters

A shortpass filter does the opposite: it transmits the visible and blocks the near infrared. Silicon sensors are sensitive well beyond what the eye sees, and that invisible extra light is what makes colours drift and whites look warm. A NIR cut filter in front of the lens restores colour fidelity and keeps colour inspection repeatable when sunlight or incandescent lighting reaches the cell.

Neutral Density Filters

Neutral density filters reduce intensity without changing colour. They are used when the scene is too bright for the exposure you need — a fast line that forces a short shutter, or a lens that has to stay wide open to control depth of field. Reducing light optically rather than closing the iris keeps the optical geometry you chose.

Polarizing Filters

Polarizers remove specular reflection. A linear polarizer on the illuminator and a second one on the lens, crossed at ninety degrees, suppress the mirror-like glare from glass, film, wet surfaces, painted metal and moulded plastic, and leave the diffuse light that carries the information. It is the single most effective way to read a code through a shiny wrapper or to find a defect under a gloss finish.

Protective Filters

Protective filters are sacrificial windows. They take the scratches, the weld spatter, the cleaning cycles and the impacts that would otherwise reach the front element of a lens that costs far more than the window. Available as plain glass, as longpass versions that also filter, and in acrylic for large apertures.

Acrylic Filters

Acrylic filters cover the sizes that glass cannot reach economically. They are cut to shape for large fields, for enclosures and for placement in front of the illuminator rather than the lens, where a lightweight, impact-resistant material is preferable.

Light Balancing Filters

Light balancing filters correct the colour temperature of a source so that a colour camera sees neutral whites. They are used where the illumination is fixed and the colour reference is not negotiable — print, textile, food grading, paint matching.

Diffuser Filters

Diffusers convert a directional beam into a soft, even field. Placed in front of a bar or panel illuminator they remove hot spots and the visible structure of the LED matrix, which is what makes a low-cost backlight out of a direct illuminator, or what allows a shiny curved surface to be imaged without a bright line across it.

Mounts, sizes and how to order
Every filter is available mounted or unmounted. Mounted versions are ready to thread onto the lens or the camera; unmounted glass is cut to shape for integration inside an enclosure, in front of an illuminator or into a custom optical assembly.
| Mounting | Use | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Threaded mount | Lenses with a filter thread — the standard case | M13.25 · M22.5 · M25.5 · M27 · M30.5 · M34 · M35.5 · M37 · M37.5 · M39 · M40.5 · M43 · M46 · M48 · M49 · M52 · M55 · M58 · M62 · M67 · M72 · M77 · M82 · M86 · M95 · M105 |
| C-mount 25.4 | Threads directly into the camera, between camera and lens | 25.4 mm |
| Slip mount | Lenses without a filter thread | Sized on the outer diameter of the lens barrel |
| Unmounted | Integration inside machines, in front of illuminators, custom optics | Round or rectangular, cut to drawing |
| Custom | S-mount and board-level optics, special assemblies | On specification |
To order, we need three things: the filter code, the mounting type and the size. If you do not know the thread size, the diameter is marked on the front ring of the lens, next to the ⌀ symbol. If you are not sure which filter, describe the application instead — see the section below.
How to specify a filter in four questions
Answering these four in order eliminates almost every wrong choice, and it is the same sequence we follow when a customer sends us an application.
- What is lighting the scene? The filter follows the illuminator, not the other way round. A red 630 nm bar wants a red bandpass; a UV source used for fluorescence wants a filter that blocks the excitation and passes the emission.
- What competes with it? Sunlight through a skylight, fluorescent ceiling lamps, a neighbouring laser, the glow of a heater. The wider the gap between your source and the interference, the more effective the filter.
- Is the surface glossy? If the defect disappears under a reflection, the answer is polarization before it is anything else — a polarizer on the light, a second one on the lens, crossed.
- Is colour part of the measurement? If yes, the near infrared has to go: a NIR-cut filter is what makes a colour inspection repeatable, and a light balancing filter is what makes the white reference correct.
Send us the answers together with a photograph of the part, and we will specify filter, mount and size along with the illuminator. Sample filters can be supplied for evaluation before the order.
